Nicoya Peninsula

Montezuma, El Chorro (Cocalito) Waterfall and Natural Rock Pools, Montezuma Waterfall and Swimming Hole

Montezuma
This is a small, cute town on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. We chose to stop here based on a recommendation from Adam’s cousin (thanks again, Saree!). It was a little break for us during our trip- we had no hikes planned, no tours booked, and no schedule to follow. It was perfect! Of course, we ended up finding a couple of waterfalls nearby, and also booked an afternoon tour to Tortuga Island! The Tortuga Island tour wasn’t anything to write home about, so I won’t spend much time on it- when we went (2014) the snorkeling was meh and I only have a picture of us with a domesticated boar… so it wasn’t very memorable. I’d probably try it again though, just in case we had a fluke day (if you read my Panama posts, you’ll know I gave San Blas a few too many chances…)

Where to Stay
We stayed at El Sano Banano (in 2014) which is/was a sister property of the Ylang Ylang Beach Resort, so we actually got to use the pool and amenities of the resort at about 1/4 of the price! The beach resort was amazing though, so if you can splurge I’d definitely recommend it! Otherwise this is a fantastic, centrally-located, comfortable budget hotel option.

Where to Eat
Cocolores was a favorite of ours… one of the best on our entire trip! It’s laid back, with good food and drinks.

El Chorro (Cocalito) Waterfall
We heard about this waterfall from some locals, so we had to give it a shot! It was small, but right on the ocean. There were natural pools nearby too, some up to about 5 feet deep! The drive from Montezuma was easy, so it could definitely be added onto any itinerary.

Montezuma Waterfall and Swimming Hole
Another tip from a local! It was an easy walk from town, and there were plenty of signs directing us here! Some young locals were jumping from the top of the falls, so that was entertaining to watch as we swam around.
